A Legacy of Education & Growth

Our Story

Location & Foundation

Belonie Secondary School, located in St. Louis, serves areas like Roche Bois, Belonie, and Mont Buxton. It originated in 1868 as a Roman Catholic boys’ school under Bishop Guerce. Managed by Marist Brothers from 1884, it became St. Louis College, a fee-paying secondary school.

Tragedy & Transformation

In 1943, a banyan tree collapsed, killing Brother Emilie and forcing the school to close temporarily. Students relocated to Victoria School until renovations were completed. In 1948, it was renamed St. John Bosco. Later, reforms integrated it into the public system, and in 1996, it became Belonie Secondary School.

Temporary Relocation

In 2017, unsafe structures led to the demolition of the S1 and S2 blocks. Students were relocated to English River and Perseverance schools. In 2019, the entire school moved to Bel Ombre due to safety concerns at La Rosiere Primary School.

Return & Modernization

In December 2022, Belonie School returned to its original site. The new Royal Street Wing was inaugurated in May 2023 by President Wavel Ramkalawan and Education Minister Dr. Justin Valentin. Under Head Teacher Ms. Medge Nancy (since 2010), the school continues to honor its rich history while embracing modern education.

VOICES FROM OUR COMMUNITY

Students & Parents Testimonials

Our students and parents are at the heart of everything we do. Their experiences and feedback reflect the impact of our school community. Here’s what they have to say about their journey with us—stories of growth, achievement, and lasting memories.

Adelle Bristol - Alumni

My experience at Belonie Secondary School was truly memorable. I was fortunate to have supportive teachers who always went the extra mile, even staying after school to hold extra classes and help us succeed.

The school also gave me the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities, including the incredible D’Arros Experience with the Save Our Seas Foundation, where I gained hands-on learning about conservation in the unique ecosystems of D’Arros Island and St. Joseph Atoll.

I also had the privilege of serving as the Vice President of the Science Club for three years, during which we organized several activities and took part in various competitions such as science fairs. One of our proudest achievements was winning first place in the Green Airport Innovation School Competition in 2023.

Belonie Secondary School also helped me build my confidence through public speaking and leadership opportunities. Most importantly, I always felt part of a welcoming community where I built lasting friendships and grew both academically and personally.

These experiences have prepared me well for the future and shaped me into a more confident and responsible person. I completed my studies at Belonie Secondary School in 2023.

Adrien Hoareau

My time at Belonie Secondary School changed my life. The teachers encouraged me to believe
in myself and supported my learning. They taught me the value of perseverance, teamwork, and respect. The school provided a welcoming environment where I made lifelong friends.

Through unique opportunities in and out of the classroom, Belonie Secondary helped me recognize my strengths and prepare for new challenges. The staff always went above and beyond to make sure every student felt valued and capable of succeeding, and I am very grateful for that.

Looking back, I can confidently say that Belonie Secondary shaped who I am today. I left with
knowledge, self-confidence, and a strong desire to succeed.

Yuhagayathri Mohan

Hi, I’m Yuhagayathri Mohan, a proud alumna of Belonie Secondary School. The school’s nurturing environment, dedicated teachers, and inspiring peers gave me the perfect foundation for my future.

During my time there, I served as President of the Science Technology Innovation Club, participated in competitions like the SCAA Young Innovative Challenge, and earned top positions, including third place in the National Olympiad. I also received the Minister’s Cup, a reflection of the support from my teachers and parents.

Beyond academics, the lifelong friendships I formed are the most treasured part of my journey at Belonie. Every moment was a cherished experience. Thank you.
